Here is what our current revision checklist looks like for this unit. I asked my students if they ever noticed that half of any book store that you walk into is reserved for nonfiction writing. My students shared the pieces of writing that spoke to them, they shared the writing strategies that they discovered and some of them even went so far as to share how they planned to use these same strategies in their own pieces of persausive writing. This meant that we were learning new strategies as the kids were already writing. The reasoning behind this is that people in lower socioeconomic groups arent looking to spend a ton of money at Whole Foods when they can easily go to the nearest fast-food restaurant and pick up the same amount for a lot less. But those who DID want to share what they had discovered (which was all but TWO of my students) went off to create charts that they could present to the class that would explain one of the writing strategies that they discovered.
